Quick Reference Guide

Knocked-Out Tooth

Pick up the tooth by the crown (top), not the root. Rinse gently with milk or saline if dirty - never scrub. Try to reinsert it into the socket immediately. If not possible, store in milk or inside your cheek. See a dentist within 30 minutes for best chances of saving it.

Bleeding After Extraction

Fold a clean gauze pad and place it over the extraction site. Bite down firmly for at least 30 minutes without checking. Avoid spitting, rinsing, or using straws for 24 hours. If bleeding continues after 2 hours, contact your dentist immediately.

Severe Toothache

Rinse your mouth with warm salt water to clean the area. Use dental floss to remove any food stuck between teeth. Take over-the-counter pain relievers (ibuprofen). Apply a cold compress to the outside of your cheek. See a dentist as soon as possible.

Broken or Cracked Tooth

Rinse your mouth with warm water to clean the area. Apply a cold compress to reduce swelling. Save any broken pieces if possible - they may be reattached. Cover sharp edges with dental wax or sugarless gum. Contact your dentist immediately.

Dental Abscess

Rinse several times daily with mild salt water. Never try to pop or squeeze the abscess yourself. Take pain relievers as directed. Seek emergency dental care immediately - infections can spread dangerously. Antibiotics may be required - only a dentist can prescribe them.

Lost Filling or Crown

Apply clove oil to the exposed area for pain relief. Use dental cement or toothpaste as a temporary fix from the pharmacy. Never use superglue in your mouth. Keep the crown if found - your dentist may reattach it. See your dentist within a few days.

Loose Tooth

Avoid chewing on that side of your mouth. Do not wiggle or play with the loose tooth. Eat soft foods only until you see a dentist. If caused by injury, see a dentist immediately. For natural loosening in children, let it fall out naturally.

When to Seek Emergency Care

Seek immediate care for: uncontrolled bleeding, severe pain not relieved by medication, knocked-out permanent teeth, facial swelling affecting breathing, fever with tooth pain, or trauma to jaw/face. Call emergency services if breathing is compromised.
